High Rocks Surf Shop was started by Sandy Wheeler. A real
people’s person, Sandy grew up selling leather belts on the flea markets for
his parent’s business. He realised from a young age that selling is in his
Unfortunately at the age of 19, disaster struck. Sandy was involved
in a horrific accident which left him paralyzed from his neck down. Sandy now a
Quadriplegic found himself trying to adapt and just survive the first few
years. Fortunately he had some great friends and support from the local
community of Umkomaas where he was raised and still residing today. Around 10
years ago Sandy realised that people will always help if you just meet them
halfway, don’t expect hand-outs for nothing. He then began selling second hand
clothes on the side of the road which was donated to him by locals of the
community. An opportunity came into sight and Sandy moved into a single garage
and began saving his money, little by little for around 2 years which then
enabled him to renovate 3 garages. Those 3 garages were turned into a Surf
Shop. Sandy often said “Since I couldn’t surf anymore, the next best thing
is having a surf shop.” That being said, Sandy made his dream come true.
He called his shop High Rocks Surf Shop. Over the years, through hard work and
complete dedication, Sandy built his shop to what it is now.
High Rocks being a popular surfing spot that Sandy and his friends frequently surfed and
spent their days learning life lessons from those elder to them.
